Key Ingredients for Irresistible Chicken Sliders

Crafting the perfect garlic parmesan chicken sliders starts with selecting high-quality ingredients. This list highlights the main components, but for precise measurements and a comprehensive breakdown, always refer to the full recipe card below.

  • Chicken Tenders: We opt for boneless, skinless chicken tenders for their quick cooking time and tender texture. If tenders aren’t available, boneless chicken breasts or thighs can be used—just be sure to slice them into smaller, slider-friendly pieces for even cooking.
  • Fresh Garlic: The heart of our garlic parmesan sauce! This recipe calls for a generous amount of fresh, minced garlic to infuse every bite with its aromatic essence. Fresh garlic is key for that vibrant, pungent flavor.
  • Butter: Salted butter is our preferred choice, adding depth to the sauce. If using unsalted butter, you may want to slightly increase the salt in the chicken seasoning or the sauce to balance the flavors. Butter provides the rich base for our sauce and helps toast the rolls to perfection.
  • Parmesan Cheese: Grated parmesan cheese melts beautifully and incorporates seamlessly into the sauce, creating a creamy, salty, and umami-rich coating for the chicken. Freshly grated parmesan will always yield the best flavor.
  • King’s Hawaiian Rolls or Slider Buns: These iconic rolls are non-negotiable for authentic Hawaiian chicken sliders. Their signature sweetness and incredibly soft, fluffy texture provide the perfect contrast to the savory chicken and toppings. They toast beautifully and hold up well to the fillings.
  • Colby Jack Cheese: This cheese is chosen for its excellent melting properties and mild, creamy flavor that complements the garlic parmesan chicken without overpowering it. The cracker-cut size is particularly convenient as it fits perfectly onto the slider buns.
  • Crispy Bacon: Cooked until perfectly crispy, bacon adds a delightful smoky, salty crunch that elevates the sliders from good to extraordinary.
  • Fresh Slider Toppings: A medley of crisp lettuce, ripe tomato slices, and thinly sliced red onion adds freshness, crunch, and a touch of tang, balancing the richness of the chicken and sauce.
  • Mayonnaise: A smooth layer of mayonnaise on the buns adds a creamy texture and helps bind all the delicious components together.

How to Make Garlic Parmesan Chicken Sliders: Step-by-Step Guide

Creating these mouth-watering sliders is a breeze with our easy-to-follow instructions. Let’s break down each step to ensure your sliders are nothing short of perfection.

1. Prepare the Chicken

Begin by preparing your chicken. If using boneless chicken breasts or thighs, slice them into approximately 4-inch pieces to match the size of your slider buns. In a large bowl or a sturdy zip-top bag, combine your chosen chicken seasonings (paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper) with a few tablespoons of olive oil. Add the chicken pieces and toss them thoroughly until each piece is evenly coated with the spices. Set the seasoned chicken aside to allow the flavors to meld while you prepare the garlic parmesan butter.

2. Craft the Garlic Parmesan Butter Sauce

This sauce is the secret weapon of these sliders! In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, add the minced garlic, red pepper flakes for a subtle kick, hot sauce for a hint of tang, and grated parmesan cheese. Whisk everything together continuously until the garlic becomes fragrant and the sauce is well combined, which typically takes about 1-2 minutes. Be careful not to burn the garlic. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the fresh minced parsley, ensuring it’s evenly distributed throughout the buttery mixture.

3. Cook the Chicken to Perfection

Now it’s time to cook the seasoned chicken. You can either pan-sear it in an oiled skillet over medium-high heat or grill it for a smoky flavor. As the chicken cooks, frequently spoon generous amounts of the prepared garlic parmesan butter sauce over both sides. This basting technique ensures the chicken remains moist and deeply flavored. Continue cooking until the chicken is thoroughly cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Once cooked, give the chicken a final brush with the garlic sauce and sprinkle with a little extra parmesan if desired. Turn off the heat, place slices of Colby Jack cheese over each chicken piece, cover the skillet with a lid, and allow the cheese to melt slightly for about 5 minutes.

4. Toast and Assemble the Sliders

The final step is assembling these masterpieces. If your King’s Hawaiian rolls are still connected, use a serrated knife to carefully slice them horizontally, separating the tops from the bottoms while keeping the individual rolls intact as a sheet. Place the bottom halves cut-side up onto a baking sheet. You can toast them under a broiler for a few minutes until they are lightly golden brown, or use a pan for a similar effect. Once the bottoms are toasted, flip the top buns so their domed sides are facing up. Lightly spread some of the remaining garlic parmesan butter on the cut-side of the top buns and toast them for another 1-2 minutes until golden.

To assemble, spread a thin layer of mayonnaise evenly over the toasted bottom buns. Layer the melted-cheese-topped chicken pieces onto the mayo. Follow with the crispy bacon strips, fresh tomato slices, thinly sliced red onion, and shredded lettuce. Finally, place the toasted top buns over the assembled sandwiches. Use your serrated knife to slice the connected sliders into individual portions and serve immediately to enjoy their warmth and fresh flavors.

Pro Tips for the Best Garlic Parmesan Chicken Sliders

Achieving slider perfection is all about the details. Here are some pro tips to ensure your garlic parmesan chicken sliders are an absolute showstopper:

  • Don’t Overcook the Chicken: Chicken tenders cook quickly. Overcooking can lead to dry, rubbery chicken. Use a meat thermometer to ensure it reaches 165°F (74°C) and then remove it from the heat promptly.
  • Evenly Slice Rolls: A good serrated knife is crucial for cleanly slicing the Hawaiian rolls horizontally. This prevents tearing and ensures a neat presentation.
  • Low Heat for Garlic Butter: When making the garlic parmesan butter, keep the heat low. Garlic burns easily, which can turn its flavor bitter. You want it fragrant, not browned.
  • Crispy Bacon is Key: Soggy bacon won’t cut it. Cook your bacon until it’s perfectly crisp to provide that essential textural contrast.
  • Warm Rolls, Melty Cheese: Serving these sliders while the rolls are still warm and the cheese is beautifully melted is essential for the best experience. The warmth enhances the flavors and textures.
  • Prep Ahead: To make serving even easier, you can cook the chicken and bacon in advance. Prepare the garlic parmesan butter sauce and store it in the fridge. Reheat the chicken and sauce, then assemble the sliders just before serving.

Variations and Substitutions to Explore

While this recipe is fantastic as is, don’t hesitate to experiment with variations to suit your taste or dietary needs:

  • Different Cheeses: Instead of Colby Jack, try provolone, mozzarella, Swiss, or even a spicy pepper jack for an extra kick.
  • Add Heat: For those who love spice, increase the amount of hot sauce or red pepper flakes in the garlic butter. You could also add sliced jalapeños to your toppings.
  • Herb Alternatives: If you don’t have fresh parsley, dried parsley can be used in a pinch (use about 1/3 the amount of fresh). Other herbs like fresh basil or chives could also complement the flavors.
  • Sauce Swaps: While the garlic parmesan sauce is a highlight, you could experiment with a different sauce base for the chicken, such as a BBQ sauce or buffalo sauce, and then add parmesan.
  • Vegetarian Option: For a meatless version, consider using grilled portobello mushrooms or thick slices of halloumi cheese in place of chicken.
  • Extra Veggies: Sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, or bell peppers can make excellent additions to the sliders.

What to Serve With Your Garlic Parmesan Chicken Sliders

These sliders are quite hearty on their own, but pairing them with a delicious side can complete your meal or appetizer spread. Here are some fantastic suggestions:

  • Crispy Fries or Onion Rings: A classic pairing that never disappoints.
  • Coleslaw or Potato Salad: Creamy, tangy sides that offer a refreshing contrast to the rich sliders.
  • Simple Green Salad: A light, fresh salad with a vinaigrette dressing can cut through the richness and add a healthy balance.
  • Corn on the Cob: Especially great for summer cookouts, grilled or boiled corn adds sweetness and a satisfying crunch.
  • Pasta Salad: A vibrant pasta salad with fresh vegetables is another excellent choice for a more substantial side.

Storage and Reheating Instructions

While these sliders are best enjoyed fresh, you can store and reheat leftovers with a few simple tips to maintain their quality:

  • Storage: Once cooled, place any leftover sliders in an airtight container. They will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. For best results and to prevent soggy buns, you might want to store the chicken and toppings separately from the buns if you anticipate storing them for more than a day.
  • Reheating in the Oven: This is generally the best method for reheating sliders, as it helps re-crisp the buns and melt the cheese without making everything soggy. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the sliders on a baking sheet and heat for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through and the cheese is re-melted. If stored separately, re-toast the buns briefly before reassembling.
  • Reheating in an Air Fryer: For a quick reheat, an air fryer works wonders. Place sliders in a single layer in the air fryer basket and heat at 300°F (150°C) for 3-5 minutes, checking frequently to prevent burning.
  • Microwave (Use with Caution): While convenient, microwaving sliders can often result in soggy buns and tougher chicken. If you must use a microwave, heat in short 20-30 second bursts until just warmed through.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are some common questions about making garlic parmesan chicken sliders:

  • Can I use frozen chicken? Yes, you can use frozen chicken tenders or breasts. Just be sure to thaw them completely before seasoning and cooking. Pat them dry to ensure a good sear.
  • Can I make the garlic parmesan sauce in advance? Absolutely! The sauce can be made a day or two ahead and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Gently warm it over low heat before using to ensure it’s fluid enough for basting.
  • What if I don’t have King’s Hawaiian rolls? While King’s Hawaiian rolls are highly recommended for their unique sweetness and texture, you can use other small dinner rolls or brioche slider buns as a substitute. The flavor profile will be slightly different but still delicious.
  • How can I make these sliders spicier? To increase the heat, you can add more red pepper flakes or hot sauce to the garlic parmesan butter. You could also include finely diced jalapeños or a dash of cayenne pepper to the chicken seasoning.
  • Are these suitable for meal prepping? You can definitely prep components in advance. Cook the chicken, bacon, and sauce, and chop the vegetables. Store them separately in the refrigerator. Assemble the sliders just before serving for the best texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. chicken tenders boneless chicken breasts and thighs work too
  • oil for marinade and cooking chicken
  • 1 pack Kings Hawaiian dinner rolls or slider buns
  • mayonnaise
  • colby jack cheese (cracker cut sized) enough slices for the sandwiches
  • 8 strips bacon, cooked crispy
  • 1/2 small red onion, sliced thin
  • 2 Roma tomatoes, sliced thin
  • 1/2 head lettuce, shredded

Garlic Parmesan Butter Sauce

  • 1 stick butter (8 tablespoons)
  • 8-10 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup parmesan, grated extra for topping
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce more if desired
  • 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
  • 1/3 cup fresh parsley, minced

Chicken Seasonings

  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  • Start by combining your chicken seasonings and place them in a large bowl or zip-top page. Cut chicken into 4″ slider sized-pieces and add them in with the seasonings along with a few tablespoons of olive oil. Toss the chicken with the spices, coating well on all sides. Set aside while you prepare the garlic butter.

Make the Garlic Parmesan Butter Sauce

  • Melt the butter over low heat in a saucepan. Add minced garlic, red pepper flakes, hot sauce and parmesan. Whisk together until garlic is fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and add parsley, whisking to combine.

Cook The Chicken

  • Cook chicken either in an oiled skillet over medium-high or grill the chicken. As they cook, spoon over the garlic parmesan butter and baste it over the chicken on both sides as they cook. Allow chicken to cook until the internal temp reaches 165 degrees.
  • Once chicken is cooked through, hit them with a final pass of the garlic sauce and sprinkle with some extra parmesan. Turn off heat and top each piece of chicken with colby jack cheese, cover with a lid and allow it to melt slightly, about 5 minutes.

Assemble the Sliders

  • If needed, slice the sliders horizontally using a serrated knife. Place them cut side up onto a baking sheet and toast under a broiler (or on your grill) until light golden brown, just a few minutes.
  • Flip the top buns so the domed tops are facing up and leave them beside the bottom buns on the pan. Toast again for until they are golden brown.
  • Add mayo to the bottom buns, spreading until smooth. Top the sliders with chicken, then top with bacon, tomatoes, red onion, and lettuce. Place the top buns over the sandwiches, slice to separate them and serve.
