Essential Ingredients for Your Mini Deep Dish Pizzas
Crafting delicious mini deep dish pizzas doesn’t require a long list of exotic ingredients. In fact, you likely have many of these staples in your pantry already! This recipe focuses on simple, accessible components that come together to create a flavor explosion. While we’ll outline the classic pepperoni and cheese version, remember that these pizzas are a blank canvas for your culinary imagination.
- Pre-made Pizza Dough: This is your ultimate shortcut! I highly recommend a tube of Pillsbury Pizza Crust for its consistent quality and ease of use. It rolls out beautifully and holds its shape in the muffin tin, creating that perfect deep-dish crust.
- Marinara Sauce: A good quality marinara sauce is key. Choose your favorite brand – something rich and flavorful that you’d enjoy on traditional pasta. You can also opt for homemade marinara if you have some on hand!
- Pepperoni: The classic pizza topping! You can use mini pepperoni for a fun look, regular slices (diced for better distribution in the mini cups), or even cupping pepperoni for those crispy edges. Feel free to experiment with other cooked meats like crumbled sausage, cooked bacon bits, or shredded chicken.
- Mozzarella Cheese: Shredded mozzarella is essential for that perfect melty, gooey pizza experience. Freshly shredded mozzarella often melts better than pre-shredded, but either will work. Consider adding a small amount of provolone or a pizza blend for extra flavor complexity.
- Garlic: Freshly minced garlic is non-negotiable for our incredible garlic butter. It adds an aromatic punch that truly elevates the pizzas.
- Unsalted Butter: The base for our flavor-packed garlic butter. Using unsalted butter allows you to control the overall saltiness of the dish.
- Fresh Parsley: Minced fresh parsley adds a touch of color and a burst of fresh, herbaceous flavor to the garlic butter. Dried parsley can be used in a pinch, but fresh is always superior here.
- Grated Parmesan Cheese: A final flourish that adds a salty, nutty, and sharp finish to your pizzas straight out of the oven.
- Red Pepper Flakes (Optional): For those who enjoy a little heat, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes adds a fantastic kick.
- Dipping Sauces (Optional): Ranch dressing or extra marinara sauce make excellent accompaniments for dipping your mini pizzas.

How to Craft Your Delicious Mini Deep Dish Pizzas: A Step-by-Step Guide
Preparing these mini deep dish pizzas is so simple, you’ll wonder why you haven’t made them sooner! It’s a fantastic recipe for getting creative without the stress of complicated cooking. Below, you’ll find a detailed walkthrough to ensure your pizzas turn out perfectly golden, cheesy, and utterly delicious every time. Remember, the full recipe card with precise measurements and timings is always available below for quick reference!
Assembly: Bringing Your Mini Pizzas to Life
These mini deep dish pizzas come together in mere minutes, making them a fantastic choice for a quick meal or appetizer. Follow these easy steps to create your individual pizza masterpieces:
- Preheat Your Oven and Prepare Dough: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). This ensures your pizzas start cooking immediately and achieve that perfect crust. Next, unroll your pre-made pizza dough and gently lay it flat on a clean surface. Using a knife or a pizza cutter, divide the dough into 8 equal-sized squares. Don’t worry about perfect measurements; rustic shapes work beautifully for mini pizzas!
- Prep the Muffin Tin: Thoroughly grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin. You can use cooking spray, butter, or even avocado oil spray to ensure the pizzas don’t stick and release easily after baking. Once greased, carefully press one dough square into each muffin cup, gently pushing it up the sides to form a deep dish “crust.” Make sure the dough is evenly distributed and creates a little well for your toppings.
- Layering for Perfection (The Secret to No Soggy Bottoms!): To prevent a soggy bottom crust – a common pizza mishap – start with a thin layer of shredded mozzarella cheese at the very bottom of each dough-lined muffin cup. This creates a barrier against the sauce’s moisture. On top of the cheese, add a small dollop of marinara sauce, followed by a sprinkle of your diced pepperoni. Add a little more mozzarella and pepperoni for extra cheesy and meaty goodness. Finish each pizza with a final, smaller dollop of marinara sauce and a light sprinkle of cheese on top for that classic browned, bubbly finish.
- Initial Bake and Garlic Butter Glaze: Place the muffin tin into your preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes. While the pizzas are baking, prepare your irresistible garlic butter. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Stir in 2 cloves of minced garlic and 1 tablespoon of fresh, finely minced parsley. Once the initial 10 minutes are up, carefully remove the pizzas from the oven. Using a pastry brush, generously spread the fragrant garlic butter over the tops of the pizzas and any exposed crust edges. This step infuses incredible flavor and helps the crust brown beautifully. Return the muffin tin to the oven and continue baking for another 5-8 minutes, or until the crusts are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.
- Final Touches and Serving: As soon as the mini deep dish pizzas emerge from the oven, they’re ready for their grand finale! Immediately sprinkle them with grated Parmesan cheese. The residual heat will slightly melt the Parmesan, intensifying its flavor. If you enjoy a touch of spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes. Let them cool in the muffin tin for a minute or two before carefully removing them. Serve warm with optional dipping sauces like ranch or extra marinara.

Pro Tips for Perfect Mini Deep Dish Pizzas
While this recipe is incredibly forgiving, a few expert tips can elevate your mini deep dish pizzas from great to absolutely phenomenal. Pay attention to these details for a consistently delicious outcome:
- Preventing Soggy Bottoms: The key to a perfectly crisp deep dish crust is a cheese barrier. Always place a layer of shredded mozzarella directly on the dough before adding any sauce. This creates a protective layer that keeps the moisture from the sauce from seeping into the dough, ensuring a firm, golden bottom.
- Doneness Check: Pizza tops often cook faster than the bottoms. To ensure your crust is fully cooked and crisp, carefully lift one of the mini pizzas with a knife or small spatula after the initial bake. The bottom should be golden brown and firm. If it’s not, you can return them to the oven.
- Avoiding Over-Browning: If the tops of your pizzas are browning too quickly but the bottoms still need more time, simply cover the muffin tin loosely with a piece of aluminum foil sprayed with non-stick spray. The non-stick spray prevents the cheese from sticking to the foil. Continue baking for an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the bottom crust is perfectly crisp.
- Customization is Key: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your toppings!
- Vegetarian Options: Sautéed mushrooms, finely diced bell peppers, onions, spinach (squeezed dry), olives, or sun-dried tomatoes.
- Meat Lovers: Cooked crumbled sausage, crispy bacon bits, shredded cooked chicken, or even tiny meatballs.
- Cheese Blends: Experiment with a mix of mozzarella, provolone, a sprinkle of cheddar, or even a dash of goat cheese for a gourmet twist.
- Sauce Varieties: Try a white garlic sauce, pesto, or even a BBQ sauce base for different flavor profiles.
- Dough Handling: Cold dough is easier to work with. If your store-bought dough has been sitting out, pop it in the fridge for 10-15 minutes before rolling. If it’s too stiff, let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes to become more pliable.
- Don’t Overfill: While it’s tempting to load up on toppings, resist the urge to overfill each muffin cup. Too many toppings can lead to uneven cooking, soggy centers, and spills. A balanced amount ensures everything cooks through and flavors meld perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mini Deep Dish Pizzas
Can I use homemade pizza dough for these mini pizzas?
Absolutely! While this recipe emphasizes store-bought dough for convenience, homemade pizza dough will work beautifully. Just ensure it’s rolled out to a consistent thickness and cut into squares that fit your muffin tin. Adjust baking times as needed, as homemade dough might have a different thickness or hydration level.
Can I prepare these mini pizzas ahead of time?
You can do some prep work in advance. You can prepare the dough squares and press them into the muffin tin, then cover and refrigerate for a few hours. You can also pre-chop your toppings. For the best quality, I recommend assembling and baking them fresh, as the dough can get soggy if left with toppings for too long before baking.
How do I store leftover mini deep dish pizzas?
Store any leftover mini deep dish pizzas in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Allow them to cool completely before storing to prevent sogginess.
What’s the best way to reheat mini deep dish pizzas?
For best results, reheat them in an oven or air fryer. Place them on a baking sheet or in the air fryer basket at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes, or until heated through and the crust is crisp again. Microwaving is also an option for speed, but the crust won’t be as crispy.
Can I freeze mini deep dish pizzas?
Yes, these are great for freezing! Once baked and completely cooled, arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be stored for up to 2-3 months. To reheat from frozen, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.
What if I don’t have a muffin tin?
While a muffin tin is ideal for the “deep dish” effect, you can adapt this recipe. You could use a mini pie pan or even shape them free-form on a baking sheet, though they would be more like mini flatbread pizzas than deep dish. The baking time might need slight adjustments.

Mini Deep Dish Pizzas
By Mallory Austin
In this super easy and semi-homemade recipe, we’ll be making mini deep dish pizzas that are smothered in garlic butter and topped with parmesan. These are the perfect football food, appetizer or just fun for kids! Dip them in ranch or marinara.

- Prep time: 5 minutes
- Cook time: 15 minutes
- Total time: 20 minutes
- Servings: 8 mini pizzas
Ingredients
Mini Deep Dish Pizzas
- 1 Pillsbury pizza dough tube
- 1/2 cup marinara sauce
- 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 20 slices pepperoni, diced
- Grated parmesan (enough to sprinkle on top)
- Red pepper flakes (optional)
- Optional dipping sauce – ranch or leftover marinara
Garlic Butter
- 4 tbsp butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, minced
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out the dough, cutting it into 8 equal-sized squares. Grease the muffin tin, then press the dough into each muffin cup, pressing it up the sides to form a deep dish crust.
- Start with a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese at the bottom (to prevent sogginess), then a sprinkle of diced pepperoni, a dollop of marinara sauce, and then a little more cheese and pepperoni. Finish it off with another small dollop of sauce and a final sprinkle of cheese on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. While baking, mix together the melted butter, minced garlic, and fresh parsley to create the garlic butter. After 10 minutes, remove the pizzas from the oven, spread the garlic butter over the top of the pizzas and any exposed crusts. Continue baking for another 5-8 minutes or until they are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
- Top the pizzas with grated Parmesan cheese immediately after they come out of the oven, along with red pepper flakes if desired. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- I like to test the bottoms of the pizzas for doneness, as sometimes the tops cook before the bottom. Use a knife to carefully lift one of them to confirm the bottom is golden brown and crisp.
- If the tops cook before the bottom, simply return to the oven with a piece of foil sprayed with non-stick spray placed loosely over the pizzas. This will prevent the tops from browning too quickly, and the spray will prevent the cheese from sticking to the foil. Cook for an additional 3-5 minutes or until the bottom of the crust is crisp.
