Skewers that are just as flavorful, wonderfully buttery, and exceptionally juicy, capturing the essence of the original without the fuss of deep-frying. You’ll be amazed at how well the air fryer provides that satisfying texture and intense flavor you crave.

This flexibility ensures a fantastic meal for all.
Why Air Frying Your Chicken Skewers is a Game Changer
The air fryer has quickly become a beloved appliance for home cooks, and for good reason. It offers a multitude of benefits, especially when it comes to preparing dishes like these chicken skewers. Here’s why integrating an air fryer into your cooking routine will elevate your meals:
- **Healthier Cooking Alternative:** One of the most significant advantages of air frying is its ability to deliver crispy, “fried” textures with a fraction of the oil used in traditional deep frying. This means you can enjoy your favorite indulgent flavors with significantly fewer calories and less fat, making these buffalo ranch chicken skewers a guilt-free pleasure.
- **Unmatched Texture and Juiciness:** The powerful circulating hot air within an air fryer ensures that every surface of your chicken skewers is cooked evenly, resulting in a beautifully golden-brown exterior with a delightful, subtle crispness. Crucially, this intense heat also locks in moisture, guaranteeing that the inside of your chicken remains incredibly tender and juicy – a perfect contrast to the flavorful crust.
- **Speed and Ultimate Convenience:** For busy weeknights, the air fryer is an absolute lifesaver. It preheats much faster than a conventional oven and cooks food in a fraction of the time. These skewers can go from your cutting board to your dinner plate in under 30 minutes, making them an ideal choice when you need a quick, delicious, and satisfying meal without compromising on flavor.
- **Effortless Cleanup:** Most modern air fryer baskets feature a non-stick coating and are often dishwasher-safe. This translates to less scrubbing and more time enjoying your culinary creations and less time spent on kitchen chores. The contained cooking environment also means fewer splatters and mess on your stovetop.
- **Incredible Versatility Beyond Skewers:** While perfect for these chicken skewers, your air fryer is a remarkably versatile kitchen workhorse. It can roast vegetables, bake small desserts, reheat leftovers to crispy perfection, and even “fry” frozen foods. Once you start using it, you’ll discover endless culinary possibilities that streamline your cooking process.
What To Serve With These Flavorful Buffalo Ranch Chicken Skewers
Our air-fried skewer recipes are renowned for their incredible versatility, and our community consistently comes up with creative and delicious serving ideas. Whether you’re aiming for a healthy, keto-friendly meal or an indulgent comfort food experience, these Buffalo Ranch Chicken Skewers fit seamlessly into any dining occasion. Here are some fantastic suggestions to inspire your next meal, ensuring a perfectly balanced and delightful spread:
Light & Fresh Serving Ideas:
- **Over a Crisp, Vibrant Salad:** For a lighter yet satisfying meal, these succulent skewers are phenomenal served atop a bed of fresh, crisp greens. Envision a hearty romaine or mixed greens salad, generously drizzled with a creamy ranch or blue cheese dressing, perhaps with some crumbled blue cheese, juicy cherry tomatoes, crisp cucumber slices, thinly sliced red onion, and crunchy croutons. The freshness of the salad provides a wonderful counterpoint to the rich, spicy chicken.
- **With a Medley of Roasted Vegetables:** Pair your skewers with a vibrant assortment of perfectly roasted vegetables. Broccoli florets, cauliflower, colorful bell peppers, tender zucchini, and slender asparagus spears, all tossed simply with olive oil, salt, and pepper, then roasted until tender-crisp, create a nutritious and utterly delicious side. The natural sweetness of the roasted vegetables harmonizes beautifully with the bold flavors of the chicken.
- **Alongside a Fresh Coleslaw:** A crisp and creamy coleslaw, with its refreshing crunch and tangy dressing, offers a fantastic textural and flavor contrast to the warm, spicy skewers.
Hearty & Comforting Pairings:
- **Classic Starchy Sides for Ultimate Comfort:** You can’t go wrong with timeless comfort food sides. Imagine fluffy baked potatoes, bursting with butter, sour cream, and fresh chives; creamy, dreamy mashed potatoes; or decadent, cheesy scalloped potatoes. For the ultimate cheesy indulgence, a side of rich mac and cheese is always a crowd-pleaser and pairs wonderfully with the bold, savory flavors of the buffalo ranch chicken.
- **Flavorful Buttery Rice Medley:** If you find yourself with any of the irresistible leftover buttery buffalo ranch sauce mixture, do not let a single drop go to waste! Stir it into a bowl of warm, fluffy rice – whether white, brown, or a hearty wild rice blend – for an incredibly flavorful and deeply satisfying side dish. A squeeze of fresh lime juice or a sprinkle of cilantro can brighten this dish beautifully.
- **Warm, Crusty Dinner Rolls or Garlic Bread:** To truly soak up every last drop of that amazing, flavorful sauce, serve your skewers with some warm, crusty dinner rolls or slices of homemade garlic bread. It’s the perfect accompaniment to complete your comforting meal.
Appetizer & Party Pleasers:
- **The Ultimate Game Day Appetizer:** These Buffalo Ranch Chicken Skewers are an absolute MVP for parties, football game gatherings, family get-togethers, or any casual social event. Buffalo ranch is a universally loved flavor, making these skewers a guaranteed crowd favorite that will disappear quickly. Their convenient skewer format makes them incredibly easy to eat without needing silverware, perfect for mingling and casual snacking.
- **Essential Dipping Sauces:** No buffalo ranch experience is complete without the perfect dipping sauces! A generous side of classic blue cheese dressing or extra creamy ranch dressing is an absolute must. For those who enjoy an extra layer of heat, a drizzle of your favorite hot sauce or a dollop of spicy mayo can take these skewers to the next level of deliciousness.
- **Mini Wraps or Sliders:** For a fun and interactive appetizer twist, remove the cooked chicken from the skewers and chop it into smaller pieces. Serve these tasty morsels in mini tortillas for small buffalo ranch chicken wraps, or on slider buns with some crisp coleslaw for a delightful bite-sized treat.

Key Ingredients for Irresistible Buffalo Ranch Chicken Skewers
Creating these remarkably flavorful skewers starts with selecting the right ingredients and understanding how each component contributes to the overall taste and texture. Here’s a detailed look at the core elements that bring this dish to life, ensuring a perfect balance of spice, tang, and savory goodness:
-
Chicken Tenders: The Ultimate Choice for Tenderness and Juiciness
While you can certainly use boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs, **chicken tenders** are my personal preference for skewers due to their inherent tenderness and ideal size. Their delicate texture cooks up incredibly moist and tender, ensuring every piece is succulent and enjoyable. If opting for chicken breasts, ensure you cut them into uniform 1-inch to 1.5-inch cubes to promote even cooking. Chicken thighs, with their higher fat content, offer a richer flavor and stay exceptionally juicy, though they might require a slightly longer cooking time.
-
Rich Salted Butter: The Foundation of Unforgettable Flavor
A full 8-ounce stick of good quality **salted butter** is an absolutely crucial ingredient for this recipe’s amazing depth of flavor and luscious texture. The butter serves multiple vital purposes: it helps the dry rub adhere perfectly to the chicken, generously bastes the skewers as they cook, and forms the irresistible, rich sauce that lavishly coats the finished product. If you’re mindful of sodium intake, feel free to substitute with unsalted butter and simply adjust the salt content in your seasonings to your personal taste preference.
-
Homemade Ranch Seasoning: Fresh, Aromatic, and Perfectly Balanced
Crafting your own ranch seasoning from scratch offers unparalleled control over the freshness and intensity of the herbal flavors. Our carefully balanced blend includes:
- **Dried Parsley:** Contributes a fresh, slightly peppery, and distinctly herbaceous note that is foundational to ranch flavor.
- **Dried Dill:** Provides that characteristic tangy, slightly sweet, and unmistakably aromatic essence that defines classic ranch dressing.
- **Garlic Powder:** Essential for imparting a deep, savory, and wonderfully pungent flavor.
- **Onion Powder:** Delivers a subtle sweetness and an aromatic backbone, rounding out the savory profile.
- **Salt & Black Pepper:** These crucial additions balance and enhance all the other complex flavors, making the seasoning truly shine.
While using quality dried herbs makes a noticeable difference in the final taste, for ultimate convenience when time is short, a good store-bought ranch seasoning mix can be a suitable substitute (just be sure to check its sodium content to adjust other salt additions accordingly).
-
Bold Buffalo Seasoning: Spicy, Savory, and Exceptionally Satisfying
This homemade dry rub is where the true “buffalo” magic unfolds, offering a complex and dynamic blend of heat, savory notes, and a hint of sweetness:
- **Cayenne Pepper:** This is the primary source of the signature buffalo heat. You can easily adjust the quantity to match your preferred spice level – remember, a little cayenne can go a long way!
- **Chili Powder:** Adds a deeper, earthy chili flavor that complements the cayenne without just adding more heat.
- **Paprika:** Contributes a lovely smoky depth, a mild sweetness, and a vibrant reddish hue that makes the chicken visually appealing.
- **Cumin:** Its earthy and warm notes add an extra layer of complexity and aroma to the spice blend.
- **Ground Mustard:** Offers a distinct sharp, tangy, and slightly pungent kick, which is a classic and often overlooked element in authentic buffalo sauces.
- **Brown Sugar:** A crucial touch of sweetness that perfectly balances the heat and savory spices, while also promoting beautiful caramelization and a glossy finish on the chicken during cooking.
- **Garlic Powder, Salt, and Pepper:** These foundational spices collectively enhance the overall savory profile, ensuring a well-rounded and deeply satisfying taste.
This homemade buffalo blend is often far superior to many generic store-bought options, allowing for precise flavor control and a truly gourmet result.
-
Fresh Chives: The Perfect Bright and Herby Finishing Touch
Never underestimate the power of fresh herbs! Minced **fresh chives** are stirred into the buttery sauce towards the end of the preparation, providing a bright, delicate oniony flavor and a beautiful, vibrant pop of green. This burst of freshness expertly cuts through the richness of the butter and the intensity of the spices, perfectly balancing the entire dish and adding an inviting aroma.
-
Skewers: The Essential Tool for Perfectly Portioned Chicken
Of course, you’ll need skewers to bring this dish together! Both **wooden skewers** and **metal skewers** work perfectly. If you opt for wooden skewers, it is absolutely essential to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before threading the chicken. This critical step prevents them from burning, charring, or splintering in the air fryer, oven, or on the grill. Metal skewers are a fantastic reusable option and conveniently do not require any soaking. Regardless of your choice, ensure your skewers are an appropriate length to fit comfortably within your air fryer basket or cooking vessel.

How to Master Air Fryer Buffalo Ranch Chicken Skewers
Follow these simple, step-by-step instructions to create perfectly cooked, incredibly flavorful chicken skewers in your air fryer. This straightforward process guarantees delicious, juicy results every time, making it a joy to prepare and even more delightful to eat.
Step 1: Prepare Your Seasonings & Chicken
- **Soak Wooden Skewers:** If you are using wooden skewers, submerge them completely in water for at least 30 minutes prior to use. This essential step prevents them from burning during the cooking process, whether in the air fryer, oven, or on the grill.
- **Combine Spice Mixtures:** In a small bowl, carefully combine all the specified ingredients for your Homemade Buffalo Dry Rub Seasoning. In a separate small bowl, mix together all the ingredients for your Homemade Ranch Seasoning. Set both prepared spice mixtures aside; they will be ready when you need them.
- **Cut and Season Chicken:** Take your 2 pounds of chicken tenders (or boneless, skinless chicken breast/thighs, cut into uniform cubes) and cut them into even 3-inch pieces. This size is optimal for skewers, ensuring consistent cooking and a perfect bite.
- **Coat the Chicken:** Place the uniformly cut chicken pieces into a large mixing bowl or a sturdy zip-top bag. Drizzle them generously with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add 1 tablespoon of your prepared Ranch Seasoning and 1 tablespoon of your Buffalo Dry Rub. Toss thoroughly, ensuring all chicken pieces are evenly coated on all sides. This initial seasoning layer is crucial for infusing deep flavor from the start.
- **Thread the Skewers:** Carefully thread the seasoned chicken pieces onto your prepared skewers. Make sure to pack them tightly together, leaving no significant gaps between the pieces. Tightly packed chicken helps to retain moisture during cooking, ensuring maximum juiciness in every bite. If your skewers happen to be too long for your particular air fryer basket, you can easily snip off the top few inches with clean kitchen shears after threading the chicken.
Step 2: Craft the Luscious Buttery Buffalo Ranch Mixture
- **Soften the Butter:** Place the entire 8-ounce stick of salted butter in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Heat it gently in the microwave for about 15 seconds. The goal is for the butter to soften and become slightly melted, achieving a creamy, spreadable consistency rather than a fully liquid state. This creamy texture allows for a smooth, emulsified sauce base.
- **Incorporate Spices and Herbs:** To the softened butter, add 1.5 tablespoons of your prepared Buffalo Dry Rub Seasoning and 1 tablespoon of your prepared Ranch Seasoning. Mix thoroughly with a whisk or spoon until all the spices are completely incorporated into the butter, creating a cohesive, aromatic blend.
- **Add Fresh Chives:** Stir in 2 tablespoons of freshly minced chives. The addition of fresh chives provides a wonderful bright, delicate oniony flavor and a beautiful visual pop of green, cutting through the richness of the butter and spices.
- **Taste and Adjust Seasoning:** Take a small taste of the butter mixture. This is your opportunity to perfectly adjust the flavor to your liking! If you desire more heat, add a bit more cayenne pepper from your buffalo rub. For a tangier, more herbaceous profile, incorporate a little more ranch seasoning. Adjust salt and pepper as needed until the flavor perfectly suits your palate.
- **Divide the Sauce for Safe Basting:** Scoop out approximately 1/3 of the prepared butter mixture into a small, separate bowl. This smaller portion will be exclusively used for basting the *uncooked* chicken skewers. Reserve the larger remaining portion of the sauce for basting the *cooked* chicken. This separation is crucial to prevent any cross-contamination. Always remember to wash your basting brush thoroughly between applications to maintain food safety.
Step 3: Air Fry, Baste, and Perfect Your Skewers
- **Preheat Air Fryer:** Begin by preheating your air fryer to a temperature of 400°F (200°C). Allowing the air fryer to fully preheat ensures consistent cooking results.
- **Initial Cook:** Carefully place 2-3 prepared chicken skewers into the air fryer basket. Ensure that the skewers are not overcrowded; leave enough space around each for proper air circulation, which is key to achieving that desirable crispy texture. Cook for 5 minutes.
- **First Flip & Baste:** After the initial 5 minutes, carefully remove the air fryer basket. Using tongs, flip the skewers over to the other side. Generously baste the partially cooked chicken with the reserved “uncooked” butter mixture (the 1/3 portion you set aside earlier). Return the basket to the air fryer and continue to cook for an additional 2 minutes at 400°F (200°C).
- **Second Flip & Baste, Cook to Doneness:** Remove the basket again and flip the skewers back over. Now, baste them generously with the main portion of the butter mixture (the one specifically reserved for cooked chicken). Continue to cook for another 5-6 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the thickest part of the chicken reaches a safe 165°F (74°C) when measured with a reliable meat thermometer. The total cooking time will be approximately 12-15 minutes, but please note that this duration can vary slightly based on your specific air fryer model and the precise size and thickness of your chicken pieces. Always prioritize achieving the correct internal temperature for food safety.
- **Final Touch:** Once the chicken skewers are perfectly cooked and beautifully golden, remove them from the air fryer. Give them one last, luxurious brush with any remaining buttery buffalo ranch sauce and sprinkle with some additional fresh chives for a vibrant garnish and extra burst of flavor.
- **Serve and Enjoy:** These hot, fragrant skewers are fantastic served immediately. Don’t forget to offer your favorite dipping sauces, such as extra ranch or a creamy blue cheese dressing, to complete this irresistible meal!

Alternative Cooking Methods: Oven & Grill Instructions
No air fryer? No problem at all! You can still enjoy these incredibly delicious Buffalo Ranch Chicken Skewers using your conventional oven or an outdoor grill. Here’s how to adapt the recipe, ensuring fantastic results regardless of your kitchen setup:
Oven Preparation:
- **Preheat Oven:** Begin by preheating your oven to a relatively high temperature of 450°F (230°C). This high heat helps to achieve a nice sear on the chicken.
- **Prepare Baking Sheet:** Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil for incredibly easy cleanup. For even better air circulation around the skewers and to promote more uniform cooking and browning, consider placing a wire rack on top of the foil-lined sheet.
- **Arrange Skewers:** Place the seasoned and threaded chicken skewers onto the prepared baking sheet. Ensure there is adequate space between each skewer to allow hot air to circulate freely, which is crucial for even cooking.
- **Initial Bake:** Bake the chicken skewers in the preheated oven for 7 minutes.
- **Flip and Baste:** Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven. Using tongs, flip each skewer to expose the other side. Generously baste the partially cooked chicken with the “uncooked” butter mixture (the portion you set aside specifically for raw chicken). Return the baking sheet to the oven and continue baking for another 7 minutes.
- **Broil for Crispy Finish (Optional but Recommended):** To achieve a lovely golden-brown, slightly crispy exterior similar to what an air fryer provides, switch your oven to the broiler setting. Broil the skewers for an additional 1-2 minutes, keeping a very close and vigilant eye on them to prevent any burning. Broilers can vary greatly in intensity, so watch carefully and remove them as soon as they reach your desired level of crispness.
- **Final Baste & Serve:** Once the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C), remove the skewers from the oven. Give them one last, generous basting with the “cooked” butter sauce and sprinkle with fresh chives for an aromatic finish.
Grill Preparation:
- **Preheat Grill:** Preheat your outdoor grill to medium-high heat. Before placing the chicken, ensure the grill grates are thoroughly cleaned and lightly oiled to prevent sticking.
- **Direct Heat Cooking:** Place the prepared chicken skewers directly over the medium-high heat.
- **Cook and Baste:** Cook each side of the skewers for approximately 5-6 minutes, or until you achieve nice sear marks and the chicken is cooked through. During the entire grilling process, remember to baste the skewers frequently with the “cooked” butter mixture. This constant basting not only infuses layers of incredible flavor but also helps to keep the chicken wonderfully moist and tender.
- **Check Doneness:** Continue cooking and basting until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches a safe 165°F (74°C) when checked with a meat thermometer. The total grilling time will naturally vary based on your specific grill’s heat output and the thickness of your chicken pieces.
- **Final Touch:** Once perfectly cooked, remove the skewers from the grill. Give them a final, lavish brush with the buttery buffalo ranch sauce and garnish with a generous sprinkle of fresh chives. Serve immediately and enjoy the smoky, spicy, and tangy flavors!

Recipe: Buffalo Ranch Chicken Skewers

By: Mallory Austin
Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 14 mins
Total Time: 24 mins
Yields: 6 large skewers
Juicy, tender chicken smothered in a buttery buffalo ranch dry rub, made easily in an air fryer for a quick meal or appetizer in just about 20 minutes! This recipe includes instructions for making homemade ranch seasoning and a delicious buffalo dry rub from scratch, though pre-made seasonings can also be used for convenience.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 lbs chicken tenders (or boneless, skinless chicken breast/thighs, cut into 1-1.5 inch cubes)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 – 8oz stick salted butter
- 2 tablespoon fresh chives, minced
Homemade Ranch Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon dried dill
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Homemade Buffalo Dry Rub Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper (adjust for desired spice level)
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon ground mustard
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper
Instructions
Part 1: Make Seasonings & Prep Chicken
- Before you start, make sure to soak wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes.
- Combine your buffalo spice mixture in a small bowl, then your ranch mixture in a separate bowl and set aside.
- Prep your chicken by cutting into uniform 3-inch pieces.
- Place them in a bowl or zip-top bag and toss in olive oil, 1 tablespoon of ranch seasoning, and 1 tablespoon of buffalo dry rub, coating well on all sides.
- Pack the chicken onto each skewer, making sure they are tightly packed with no space in between to ensure maximum juiciness. If needed, after they are skewered, snip the top few inches of the skewers to fit in the air fryer.
Part 2: Make Butter Mixture
- Place 1 stick of butter in a bowl and heat for 15 seconds to soften and slightly melt so it’s creamy and spreadable but not fully liquid.
- Add 1.5 tablespoons buffalo seasoning and 1 tablespoon ranch seasonings, mix well, then add chives. Taste and adjust by adding more buffalo or ranch if needed to reach your desired spice level.
- Scoop out 1/3 of the sauce into a small bowl and use that for basting the uncooked chicken. Reserve the remaining sauce for basting the cooked chicken so you don’t cross-contaminate. Be sure to wash the basting brush in between.
Part 3: Cook & Baste Chicken
- Cook 2-3 skewers at a time in an air fryer at 400°F (200°C) for 5 minutes.
- Remove and flip the skewers and baste with the “uncooked” sauce, returning to cook an additional 2 minutes at 400°F (200°C).
- Flip them back, baste with more of the “cooked” sauce and cook another 5-6 minutes or until the internal temp reaches 165°F (74°C). Total cook time is about 12-15 minutes. This timing will vary based on your air fryer.
- Once they are finished cooking, hit them with a final pass of the buttery buffalo ranch sauce and sprinkle with some additional chives. Enjoy!
Notes & Tips
- **Seasoning Shortcut:** You can use premade store-bought buffalo dry rub and ranch seasoning instead of making the seasonings from scratch. If the seasonings have high sodium, you may want to substitute the butter for unsalted butter.
- **Oven Preparation:**
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Place chicken skewers on a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil (and a wire rack if desired) and cook for 14 minutes, flipping halfway through and basting with butter a few times throughout the baking process.
- Switch the oven to broil and cook an additional 1-2 minutes to get the tops golden brown. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
- Remove from the oven and baste it one last time with the butter sauce and sprinkle with leftover chives.
- **Grill Preparation:**
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
- Place the prepared skewers over direct heat and cook each side for 5-6 minutes, basting with butter throughout the cooking process.
- Remove from the grill when chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) and baste it one last time with the butter sauce and sprinkle with leftover chives.
- **Spice Level:** Adjust the cayenne in the buffalo seasoning to your personal preference for heat. For a milder version, reduce or omit. For extra spice, increase it!
- **Meal Prep:** Prep the chicken and seasonings up to a day in advance. Store seasoned chicken (unthreaded) and butter mixture separately in the refrigerator. Thread just before cooking.
